It's hard to figure out what your baby will need before they arrive, especially if it is your first child. A crib? yes please! baby bath tub? definetly! A jogging stroller, shopping stroller, and a high tech one? sure!
You wont need to buy everything that is
offered in the stores. You probably wont use atleast 1/4 of the items
that you buy for your baby. With my first child I bought everything that
i thought looked cute and cool plus all of the "essentials". I learned
my mistakes and with my second child I had figured out what I would need
for his first year. Here is my list of the top 5 items you will need.
1. Burp Cloths
up and drool and baby food OH MY! Burp cloths have been my savior for a
lot of things. Both of my sons were big on spitting up after
breastfeeding. And not just little drops of spit up, it was projectile!
Once they were over the spit up stage it was onto the 5 pounds of drool
that poured out of their little mouths a day. Plus burp cloths are great
for cleaning baby food off of their faces. I also used swaddling
blankets as burp cloths on those days when it was a non stop spit up
2. Swaddle Me
With our first son we would swaddle him with regular swaddling blankets. The
problem with those were that he would always break free out of them at
night and wake up crying wanting to be wrapped up again. This made for A
LOT of long nights. With my second child I discovered the swaddle me
babies are amazing! They have velcro on 3 different spots to help
secure your baby nice and tightly inside of them. My second son slept
through the night by 5 weeks with using the swaddle me. Only problem
with swaddling is breaking the habit, but luckily it didn't take too
long to get him used to not wearing them once he got a little older.
swings are amazing! Depending on the type you get they can rock side to
side, front to back, play music, make rainforest noises and some even
vibrate. I would let my boys take short naps in there swings when they
were under 3 months. It was also a great way to get some cleaning done
or to cook dinner. They are very entertaining to a newborn. Some have
mobiles on them with little toys hanging down, others have mirrors for
the baby to look at themselves in.
4. Co sleeper bed side bassinet
too scared to sleep with my new baby in bed with us. Always afraid that
my husband would roll over on top of him since he sleeps like an
animal! My mother in law bought us a bedside co sleeper bassinet for our
second son and it was amazing! It helped him sleep and me sleep knowing
that he was right there next to me and easy to reach.
5. Baby Clothes
might be thinking " Of course we need baby clothes, I know that is an
essential" and your right! But what I want to point out is to not buy a
bunch of newborn or 0-3 month clothing. You wont know how big or small
your baby is going to be until they arrive. I made the mistake with both
of my boys and bought a lot of newborn items. For my first son this was
ok because he was only 6 pounds so he fit into them for a little while.
With my second son, however, this was not the case as he was 8 pounds
at birth. He didn't even get to wear the newborn clothes! And they were
so cute too! I recommend buying a few onsies that are 0-3 months and
some pants but don't over due it. They grow out of clothes so fast,
especially in the first few months.
I hope these tips help some and if anyone has any other great types please leave them in the comments below!
